Additional information

1. given the traditional importance of rain for the land and harvest in Ukraine, дощ figures in a large number of folk sayings as, for example: 'дощ у жнива — як п’яте колесо до воза' (rain in harvest time is needed like a fifth wheel on a cart); 'дощ ллє, як із відра' - it's raining cats and dogs, it's bucketing down (literally: 'the rain is pouring as if from a bucket')

2. курячий дощ (literally 'chicken rain') - a few drops of rain on a sunny day

3. from a Cossack drinking song: 'на тім світі не дають горілки, ані пива-меду, ні вина, води трошки, ще й тії дощівки - пиймо, браття, пиймо все до дна!' - 'in the other world you don't get any liquor, you don't get any ale, or mead or wine, just a bit of water, and, what's more, rainwater, so drink up, brothers, drink up, drain your glass!'

4. дощ, дощик and other derivatives should not be confused with words relating to дошка, 'plank of wood' or 'board': дощечка (little plank), дощок (genitive plural of 'board) etc.
