Frequently used verbs: stable stress

In the case of verbs marked "perfective only", this stress pattern applies only to the perfective. In the imperfective there is a stress shift.

Type 1

Verbs in which the stress is stable throughout all forms and can be deduced from the infinitive.

Where the perfective is formed by addition of a prefix, this form is given in brackets as the stress remains the same.

Type 2

Verbs in which the stem ends in a vowel, the stress falls on a syllable before the penultimate syllable and is stable throughout all forms; can be deduced from the infinitive.

вече́ряти (повече́ряти)have one’s evening meal, dine

Type 3

As Type 2. Stable stress, but differing only in the fact that the -ва is dropped in the present.

N.B. In some other verbs having -ва before the ending, e.g. працюва́ти працю́ю, the stress shifts to the previous syllable in the present (when the -ва is dropped).

Type 4

Verbs with a stem ending in a consonant, in which the stress falls on a syllable before the ‑ати / ‑ити / ‑ути ending, is stable throughout all forms and can be deduced from the infinitive.

си́пати (поси́пати) си́плюpour (usually non-liquids), strew, scatter

ти́снути (нати́снути)press, put pressure on; click (as with a computer mouse)

ї́хатиtravel (unidirectional)

* The verb знахо́дити(ся) and others are conjugated like ходи́ти but have a fully stable stress pattern, unlike ходи́ти, which has end stress in the 1st person singular only (ходжу́).

Type 5

An important small group of verbs (marked by their stems in «е») with stable end stress (imperfective future stress is derived from the infinitive).

вести́ веду́ вела́lead (accompany)

везти́ везу́ везла́transport, convey (by transport)

провести́(perfective only) conduct, organise; spend, pass (time, holiday)

пекти́ (спекти́) печу́ пече́шbake; scorch; blaze (e.g. of sun)
