Additional information
1. печера is etymologically related to піч - oven, stove, referring to the concept of a hole (in the ground), and пекти - to bake; the word may well also be related to the Latin for a cave - specus
2. the Києво-Печерська Лавра (the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves) takes its name from the near and far caves where the monks were traditionally buried, starting from the 11th century
3. there are caves in many regions of Ukraine, with the most spectacular being in western Ukraine (particularly the Carpathian region) and the Crimean mountains; the salt caves (соляні печери) in the Carpathians (with their mineral-infused air) are used for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
