Additional information
1. the word formation of пів/день and полу/день (пів - half) is the same as for many languages, including the English 'mid/day'
2. полуденок - a traditional word for lunch, a midday or afternoon meal; the more usual current word is обід; ланч is used for a special lunch, for example, meeting up with friends for lunch, or a working lunch
3. in compound words the hyphen is used when the word is composed of two separate concepts (such as південно-східний), but is not needed when the two components make up one concept (such as південноафриканський).
