My father constantly studied (improved himself). He voraciously collected books, and could be proud of his huge library of beautifully bound books, perfectly catalogued.
He would speak with me for hours about Ukrainian literature and history, would read me passages from the works of his favourite authors, igniting in me a love for everything our land gave us.
All these books, everything he had collected, was supposed to pass to me, in time, as my inheritance. But it was not destined to be.
He was a just and strict man, but, at the same time, cheerful and loving.
He loved music and played many instruments – violin, viola and flute – and performed works of chamber music with his musician friends.
His greatest passion was the bandura. One of his friends, who was a bandura player, made one of these for him.
He learnt to play Ukrainian ballads and songs and sang them in his pleasant baritone.
